Dear Starving Bear, Big Oak is my given Blackfoot name ( A good amount of Nez Perce thowrn in and even a basket of Swiss through my Mom). When I was 12 I went to Indian camp. Most the kids were Sioux or Cherokee but I think over the years I met every tribe still alive. I received my name at the naming campfire along with the others. It was a camp for Kids, Indian part or whole, who had no fathers. Each one of us was under an adult who acted as our Uncle . In the past, many Indian boys were taught life skills (riding, hunting , tracking etc) by their Uncle. The exchange made sure no teaching preference was given over another child. My Uncle , William Fisher, a Sioux, named me Big Oak. It’s part spiritual, part observation that a name is chosen. I attended Indian camp for 4 years in a row. (It really wasn’t called Indian camp, it’s just what us kids called it.) During the ceremony, much sweet grass is burnt and some of the Sioux kids danced. He told the group, Big Oaks are strong, protective and give shelter to those in need. Their roots and branches are strong and are not moved when storms occur. Joseph is now called Misituha (Big Oak) as he is the tree we run to for shelter .Joseph was chosen by my parents. It satisfied both. My Mom for Saint Joseph, my Dad for the name of the chief of the Nez Perce to whom I am distantly related to through Olocott, his brother. Names are very important things. They tell others about you even if they don’t personally know you. They are a mirror of who you are.
