Renaissance Revisted: Jeffrey Chong Wang

Tuesday, January 12, 2016

Jeffrey Chong Wang is a contemporary painter whose work inevitably brings up comparisons to the Northern Renaissance. The subject matter, clothing and props are modern, if ambiguous, but the delicate application of detail, stylized representation of the human body and tightly- orchestrated compositions point back to the Dutch and Flemish painters from the 1400 to 1600’s. Accomplishing this level of technicality is no small feat; however, the beauty, humor and sense of mystery in the work is what seals the deal.

Picasso Sculpture at MoMA

Saturday, December 19, 2015

I squeezed in a visit to MoMA’s incredible exhibit of Picasso Sculpture this week. While I appreciate Picasso’s genius, I also get tired of seeing his most famous work (i.e. paintings) in museums. Whereas his paintings show a very linear, outside view of his career, his sculpture shows a much more personal and intimate side of the artist. This probably has something to do with the fact that many of his sculptures were personal works he did not intend to exhibit. The show was eye-opening for me; in fact I was surprised to learn many new things about Picasso. The exhibit is absolutely worth a visit.

.
WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT PICASSO AT MOMA:

[Sound familiar? He did the same with classical painting as a teen.]

Artist Crush: David Pottinger

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

Melbourne ceramic artist David Pottinger makes incredible, patterned ceramics that look like marble or mosaics. They are so exquisite that it’s hard to fathom they were made by human hands! He was interviewed by the Australian design blog, The Design Files.

Artist Crush: Svenja Deininger

Thursday, December 3, 2015

Viennese artist Svenja Deininger is showing at Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York, where you’ll find most of these large-scale abstract paintings. Isn’t it amazing how beautiful and inventive abstract art can be, even after more than 50 years?
