Artist Crush: Lora Northway

Canadian artist Lora Northway has a magical collection of large-scale artwork debuting at Definitely Superior on Jan. 10th.

“This series began with an investigation into my family’s immigration to Canada in 1901. My great great grandmother Aina Wilen traveled from Finland at 17, became a key founder of the women’s movement in Thunder Bay… I was able to travel to the cabin she helped build, document rugs she wove, and uncover dozens of photographs of my family canoeing, working, building and fighting for the vote.  These paintings honour their lives and traditions.”

I know Lora! I met her via DefSup (gallery) in Thunder Bay, ON when I had a show there in 2010. She’s WONDERFUL as are these paintings. So happy to see them here. CONGRATS, Lora!!!

Who says you get to have such a great job, Kate! I love these…especially the last two. What a great pairing they are. Another hit selection…and hey to Jennifer Davis! Laura 🙂

The use of color here is so surprising and lovely – seeing something new every time I look at these. The hands in the 1st/2nd image and the neon in the aspen tree trunks in the 5th are stunning

These are incredibly lovely. They have the feeling of collage in painted form. Thank you for the introduction to Lora’s work!
